The second cost is the inability to change. This one’s subtle but devastating. If you can’t observe a pattern, you can’t modify it. The person who keeps getting into the same type of relationship, or repeating the same career mistake, or finding the same conflict dynamic with different people — this person is usually not stupid or self-destructive. They’re living inside their patterns without sufficient witness access to see what those patterns are. You can’t work on what you can’t observe.

The third cost is the loss of the present. The DMN, when it’s running unchecked, is almost never in the present moment. It’s in yesterday’s conversation or tomorrow’s anxiety. It’s in a future catastrophe or a past injustice. The actual present moment — what’s actually happening right now, in this room, in this body, in this exchange — gets very little attention. Life happens while the mind is somewhere else.

The depression-rumination loop is a witness failure

Depression research has increasingly converged on a specific mechanism: rumination — the repetitive, self-referential, non-productive thinking about one’s situation, causes, and consequences — as the primary driver of depressive episodes’ persistence and severity. Rumination is, neurologically, DMN hyperactivity without witness correction. The mind circles the same content repeatedly, finding new angles of suffering, building the story of what’s wrong into an ever more elaborate and convincing structure.

Witness access doesn’t make the painful content disappear. But it does create the meta-level recognition: ‘I’m ruminating right now. My mind is going in circles. The same content is appearing for the fifteenth time today.’ That recognition, without being dramatic or critical of the rumination, creates a moment of distance from it. The mind can be invited toward a different direction. Not suppressed. Not fought. Just gently redirected, from the witness position, with the authority of the one who’s watching rather than the one who’s caught.

6. How to Actually Develop Sakshi Bhav — Practically Speaking

This is where most philosophy texts on the witness get frustrating. They describe what the witness is beautifully. They don’t say what to do on a Tuesday morning when you’re reactive and stressed and the last thing that feels available is equanimous observation.

So let’s be practical.

Start with the body, not the mind

The mind moves so fast that trying to witness its contents directly is like trying to watch a river by jumping into it. The body is slower and more accessible. Develop the habit of checking in with the body’s state before engaging with the mind’s content. What’s the tension level in the shoulders right now? Where is the breath sitting? Is the jaw clenched? This isn’t mindfulness as a formal practice. It’s a three-second check-in that creates a moment of observation before the automatic response launches. That moment is the beginning of the witness.

Learn to notice the narrative

The mind’s primary mode is narrative — storytelling. It’s almost always constructing an account of what’s happening, what it means, what’s going to happen next, whose fault it is, what you should have done. The witness position, for practical purposes, begins when you can notice that a narrative is running rather than simply living inside it. Not analyzing the narrative, not judging it, not trying to change it. Just noticing: ‘the mind is telling a story right now.’ That noticing creates a sliver of space between you and the story.

The labeling practice

Matthew Lieberman at UCLA found that labeling emotional states — putting words to what you’re feeling — reduces amygdala activation. ‘I’m feeling anxiety right now’ produces a different neurological response than simply feeling anxiety. The act of naming creates a tiny observer position: you’ve named it, which means for a fraction of a second you were slightly outside it. This is the simplest version of the Sakshi practice: name what’s happening in your inner life as it’s happening. ‘I’m noticing frustration.’ ‘I’m noticing the mind going to what-if territory.’ ‘I’m noticing the pull toward checking my phone.’

Ramana Maharshi’s ‘Who Am I?’

Ramana Maharshi’s self-inquiry practice is the most direct path to the Sakshi that the tradition offers. When a thought, emotion, or reaction arises, rather than engaging with its content, turn the attention back to ask: who is noticing this? Who is having this experience? Not as a philosophical question requiring an intellectual answer but as a pointing gesture toward the awareness itself. The answer is never a concept. The answer is the direct noticing of the awareness that was doing the asking. That’s it. That’s the Sakshi. It was there the whole time. The practice is learning to turn toward it.

The sitting practice

Eventually, some form of formal sitting practice becomes useful. Not because sitting is sacred but because it creates the conditions in which witness development can happen without the simultaneous demands of external life. The structure is simple: sit with a straight spine, close or soften the eyes, direct attention to the breath or a simple mantra, and when the mind wanders (which it will, constantly, repeatedly, for a long time), return attention without drama. The return is not a failure. The return is the practice. Each return is a micro-moment of witness — you noticed the mind had wandered. You were the observer, briefly, of the mind’s wandering. That’s it. That’s what’s being built.

7. Turiya and Metacognition — The Deepest Convergence

Now let’s go to the place where the Indian philosophical tradition and modern neuroscience converge most precisely — not at the surface level of ‘meditation is good for you’ but at the deep level of what the witness actually is.

The Mandukya Upanishad is twelve verses long. It’s possibly the most philosophically dense piece of writing ever produced in any tradition. It describes four states of consciousness — Jagrat (waking), Svapna (dreaming), Sushupti (deep sleep), and Turiya (the fourth). Turiya is the strange one. It’s not a fourth state alongside the other three. It’s the awareness in which all three states appear. It’s consciousness itself — prior to its contents, prior to its modifications, the unchanging background against which all changing experience is projected.

This is what neuroscience is beginning to describe when it talks about ‘pure awareness’ and ‘the observer.’ The anterior prefrontal cortex’s metacognitive function is, in the brain’s terms, the closest analogue: the capacity for consciousness to represent its own processes to itself, to stand back and watch what the brain is doing rather than simply doing it. It’s not Turiya itself — Turiya in the tradition is the ground of all consciousness, not just a cognitive faculty. But in practice, developing the anterior prefrontal’s metacognitive capacity is developing the brain’s ability to instantiate the witness position.

And here’s what I find most genuinely interesting about this convergence. The Indian tradition says that Turiya is always present, always already the background, never actually absent — only obscured by identification with the mind’s contents. The neuroscience says that the metacognitive capacity is always present in the structure of the brain, active to varying degrees, trainable through practice but not created from nothing. Both frameworks are saying: the witness isn’t an achievement. It’s an uncovering.

Nisargadatta Maharaj’s direct statement — ‘I am the awareness in which all appears’ — is the tradition’s most economical expression of this. Not ‘I am trying to develop witness capacity.’ Not ‘I have achieved a state of witnessing.’ But ‘I am, fundamentally, at my most basic level, the awareness in which everything else appears.’ Including the thoughts about what I am. Including this sentence. Including the reading of this sentence.

The neuroscience hasn’t arrived at that depth yet. It’s mapped the prefrontal metacognitive function. It’s documented what happens in the DMN when meditation develops. It’s confirmed that the brain changes structurally through sustained witnessing practice. What it hasn’t been able to address — because it can’t, using its instruments — is the nature of the awareness itself that’s doing the witnessing. For that, the tradition remains the only map available.

The witness isn’t something you achieve through practice. Practice removes what’s covering it. The witness was always there, always already the background of all your experience. You’ve just been looking at what appeared in it rather than at what it is.

The Quest Sage Insight

I want to say something about why I think Sakshi Bhav is the most practically important thing in this entire platform, more than any nutritional protocol or medical finding or philosophical framework.

Here’s the reason. Every other practice — every habit change, every emotional regulation technique, every attempt to think more clearly or act more authentically — requires the witness. Without the witness, you can’t see the habit you’re trying to change. You can’t notice the emotional pattern as it’s starting. You can’t make a deliberate choice about your response. You can’t distinguish your conditioned reaction from your genuine response. You can’t hear yourself accurately. You can’t see other people accurately, because you’re seeing them through the unexamined lens of your own mind rather than through clear observation.

The witness is what makes it possible to even see that covering, let alone begin to work with it. You can’t undo what you can’t observe. And you can’t observe what you’re fully identified with.

The tradition knew this. Patanjali didn’t put Samadhi first in the Yoga Sutras. He put Chitta Vritti Nirodha first — the restraint of the mind’s fluctuations, the establishment of the witness position — because everything else depends on it. The Buddha didn’t begin with doctrine. He began with attention: ‘I will teach you how to attend.’ Ramana Maharshi reduced everything to a single inquiry: ‘Who am I?’ pointing back at the awareness itself as the starting point of all understanding.

This is the real hack. Not a productivity tool. Not an optimization technique. The foundational position from which everything else becomes possible: the capacity to be the one who’s watching what’s happening in your mind and life rather than simply the one who’s inside it.

What You Can Do With This

  • Start with three seconds. Before any significant response — an email you feel reactive to, a conversation that’s starting to escalate, a decision you need to make while emotionally activated — pause for three seconds and name what’s happening in your inner state. ‘I’m feeling triggered.’ ‘My mind is going to catastrophe.’ ‘I’m having the thought that this is unfair.’ That naming is the beginning of the witness position.
  • Try the labeling practice for one week: at three or four points during the day, pause for thirty seconds and note what state the mind is currently in. Not to change it. Just to observe it. ‘Anxious. Distracted. Calm. Ruminating. Excited.’ The observing creates the micro-witness position. Over time, this extends naturally.
  • When you catch yourself deep in a mental loop — the same anxious thought for the tenth time, the same resentment circling back — try Ramana Maharshi’s question: ‘Who is noticing this?’ Not as a philosophical puzzle. As a genuine turning of attention away from the content and toward the awareness that’s aware of the content. Even a moment of that turning is valuable.
  • For formal practice: sit quietly for ten minutes. Bring attention to the breath. When the mind wanders (guaranteed), return attention without criticism. The return is the practice. You were the witness for the moment you noticed the wandering. Everything else follows from building the capacity for more of those moments.
  • Read Yoga Sutra 1.3 and 1.4 together: ‘Then the seer abides in its own nature / At other times, the seer identifies with the mind’s modifications.’ Then, for one day, try to notice which state you’re currently in: are you the witness observing the mind’s modifications, or are you identified with them? You don’t have to do anything with that observation. The noticing is already the practice.

3.   Patanjali’s Drashta (Yoga Sutras 2.20), the Mandukya Upanishad’s Turiya, Nisargadatta Maharaj’s ‘I am the awareness,’ Frankl’s ‘gap between stimulus and response,’ and ACT’s ‘observing self’ are all pointing at the same functional capacity from different directions — the position of pure awareness that observes experience without being fully identified with or controlled by it — and all four traditions converge on the same practical conclusion: this capacity is both the prerequisite for all other change and the thing that most people spend the least time developing.

Conclusion: The Real Hack Isn’t a Method. It’s a Position.

Seven dimensions of the same pointing gesture. The witness state. The Sakshi. The Drashta. The observer. The metacognitive awareness. The gap between stimulus and response. The DMN’s quieting under sustained observation. The anterior prefrontal cortex developing with consistent practice. The Turiya that was always already the background. The Frankl who watched himself in Auschwitz. The Nisargadatta who looked at the awareness itself. Patanjali who built an entire science of mind around the distinction between the seer and the seen.

None of this is complexity for its own sake. It all reduces to something extraordinary in its simplicity: the mind can observe itself. You can be the awareness of your own experience rather than simply the automatic product of it. That position changes everything, because without it you’re running on conditioning and automatic response in patterns you can’t see, and with it you have something genuinely available that’s more interesting, more useful, and more free.

The position isn’t comfortable in any conventional sense. The witness doesn’t offer the relief of being right, or the reassurance of being in control, or the pleasure of being recognized. It offers something quieter and more fundamental: the capacity to see what’s actually happening clearly, without the distortion of being fully inside it.

That’s the real hack. Not to think better or feel less or perform differently. To watch. To be present to your own mind with enough clarity and distance that you can actually participate in what your life becomes rather than simply narrate it after the fact.

And in the gap, choice exists.
