Every human being alive today knows, with complete certainty, that they will die. The date is unknown but the fact is not. And yet almost all of them live with an urgency that suggests they are not going anywhere. They plan careers decades ahead. They argue passionately about political positions whose outcomes they may never see. They fall in love with an intensity that implies forever. What is actually happening?
The Witness

Begin with the physics. In 1944, the physicist Erwin Schrödinger wrote a small book called What is Life? His answer: life is, at its most fundamental level, a system that maintains itself against entropy. The second law of thermodynamics tells us that every closed system tends toward increasing disorder — toward the maximum equilibrium of death, which is the state of no differentiation, no information, no structure. The universe as a whole is moving toward heat death: maximum entropy, maximum sameness. Life is the extraordinary local exception. A living organism consumes energy from its environment and uses it to maintain its own improbable organisation — to hold its structure together against the universal tendency toward dissolution. Schrödinger called this negentropy: negative entropy, the defiance of the trend.

The urgency of life, in this frame, is the urgency of the improbable. You are — biologically, physically — an extraordinarily unlikely configuration of matter holding itself together against the universal tendency toward dispersal. Every cell in your body is working at this moment, consuming energy, to maintain the improbability of your existence. That work has no pause button. It does not stop to philosophise. It simply continues, as long as it can. The urgency is not a choice. It is the physics of what life is.

But this explains the biology of engagement without explaining the felt quality of it. Why does the human being not only continue existing but invest so passionately — in relationships, in legacy, in meaning, in argument? This is where the psychologist Ernest Becker arrives. In The Denial of Death (1973, Pulitzer Prize winner), Becker argued that the awareness of mortality — which is uniquely human among all animals — is so existentially intolerable that the entirety of human culture is, at some level, a response to it. Every art, every religion, every institution, every ideology is an immortality project: a symbolic extension of the self beyond biological limits. The career builds a reputation that will outlast the body. The child carries something forward. The painting remains on the wall. The building stands for centuries. The human being invests in these projects not because they eliminate death but because they extend the self symbolically beyond biological limits.

Sheldon Solomon, Jeff Greenberg, and Tom Pyszczynski tested Becker’s thesis experimentally across five decades in what became known as Terror Management Theory — now one of the most replicated bodies of research in social psychology, with more than 500 studies across 26 countries. The finding: when people are reminded of their mortality, even briefly and subliminally, they invest more intensely in their worldviews, their group identities, their achievements, and their meaning-projects. They become more certain of their beliefs. They defend more aggressively against those who challenge their worldview. They seek more urgently to accomplish something that will matter. The urgency of life is not despite death-awareness. It is, paradoxically, produced by it. The engine of human engagement runs partly on mortality fuel.

Neuroscience adds the mechanism. The prefrontal cortex — the region responsible for planning, future-directed thought, and the narrative self — generates the experience of a continuous “I” that extends forward through time. This future-directed self is not philosophically justified. No argument establishes that the self who wakes tomorrow is genuinely the same self who went to sleep tonight. But the brain does not give you philosophy. It gives you a model of reality that includes a future in which you continue to exist and act. This model is the operating system on which all planning, all investment, all love runs. Without it, action becomes impossible. The urgency of life is, in part, the urgency of a brain that cannot help projecting itself forward — because without that projection, there is no action at all.

The human being runs from death toward the only transcendence available: to matter, to leave something behind, to be more than a body that will decompose. The running is the life.

Question 2: The Child Plays Because the Parent Guarantees Food — What Is the Adult’s Hidden Parent?

The child does not worry whether tomorrow will exist because someone has already made arrangements for tomorrow. But the adult — who knows that no parent guarantees their continuity, that the system will eventually fail, that the ground will give way — continues with the same absorbed urgency as the child at play. What is the adult’s hidden parent? What allows adult engagement to proceed?

There are several hidden parents operating simultaneously, and most adults know none of them by name.

The first is the brain itself. The neuroscientist Karl Friston’s predictive coding framework describes the brain as a prediction machine: it continuously generates a model of the expected next moment and adjusts that model against incoming sensory data. The felt sense of continuity — the experience that the world will persist, that the self who wakes tomorrow is the same self who went to sleep tonight — is not discovered by the brain. It is generated by it. The brain is the parent that guarantees tomorrow, by constructing the experience of tomorrow’s likelihood moment by moment, so seamlessly that the person inside it has no experience of its artificiality. The ground feels solid because the brain makes it feel solid.

The second is what Heidegger called thrownness — Geworfenheit. We arrive into a world already structured, already in progress, already providing the language, the relationships, the institutions, the food supply chains, the legal systems that make action possible. We did not create the world we act in. We were thrown into it. The adult who is urgently pursuing a career is standing on ground they did not build. The entire apparatus of civilisation — which maintains the conditions that allow the urgency to proceed — is the second hidden parent.

The third parent — which the devotional traditions describe though they disagree about its nature — is the ground of being beneath both the brain and the civilisation. Paul Tillich called it the power of being itself. The Vedantic tradition calls it Brahman. The Sufi tradition describes it as the wine that intoxicates before the vine is planted. Whatever the name, the concept is consistent across traditions: beneath the contingency of individual existence there is something that does not contingently exist. Something that simply is. The mystic’s experience — across every tradition, in every century — is precisely this: the discovery, in the deepest point of inner stillness, of a ground that does not move. The child plays freely because the parent is present. The sage acts fully because the Ground is present. The quality of absorption is the same in both. Only the metaphysics of the guarantee differs.

Most adults live in the care of all three parents simultaneously, without acknowledging any of them. The philosophical adult who investigates the question discovers, typically, that the brain’s parent and the civilisation’s parent are real and verifiable. The Ground’s parentage remains a matter of experience rather than argument. Those who have had the experience report it as the most certain thing they have ever known. Those who have not report its absence as equally certain. The conversation between these two groups has been running, with remarkable consistency, for at least three thousand years.

Question 3: Why Do Humans Produce Children Who Will Also Die?

Every parent knows their child will die. This is the most certain knowledge available. And yet the desire to produce, protect, and invest in children is among the most powerful drives in human experience. No philosophy of impermanence has ever made this desire dissolve. Why?
The Witness

Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene (1976) gives the most unromantic and most physically precise answer. The individual organism is not the unit of evolution. The gene is. The gene uses the individual body as a vehicle for its own replication and dispersal. The parental drive — experienced by the individual as the most personal and most overwhelming love they have ever felt — is the gene’s drive, operating through the architecture of the individual’s emotional system because the architecture works. The person who says they would die for their child is accurately reporting their phenomenology. That phenomenology serves the gene’s interest in the child’s survival with perfect efficiency.

This is reductive and it is also, in its own terms, completely true. But it is not the complete picture.

Schopenhauer arrives at something deeper. In The World as Will and Representation (1818), he argues that the individual is the expression of a cosmic Will-to-live — not a personal will, not a chosen intention, but a blind, pervasive striving that operates through every living thing without the living thing’s full consent. This Will does not value the individual. It values the continuation of the process. The individual produces children because the Will-to-live is using the individual for this purpose. What the individual experiences as the most personal love they have ever felt is the Will wearing the costume of human emotion to ensure its own continuation. Whether this is disturbing or liberating depends on whether you identify with the individual or with the process.

Now add entropy. Each individual organism is a temporary pattern of information maintained against universal dissolution. When the organism dies, its particular pattern dissolves back into the entropic background. The child is not the continuation of the parent’s body — the body dissolves regardless. The child is the continuation of a pattern: of information, of genetic tendency, of the specific improbable organisation that life represents. The parent is handing the negentropy torch. The fire passes even as the candle burns out. The relay is what life is doing at the physical level: maintaining the improbable against the entropic background, not in any single body but in the continuous transmission from body to body across generations.

But none of these explanations touch the specific quality of the experience. The love that a parent feels for a child is one of the most intense and least deniable experiences available in human life. Oxytocin, the hormone of bonding and trust, floods the system at the birth of a child in ways that override rational calculation. The exhaustion of new parenthood, the sacrifice it demands, the years of disproportionate investment in an organism that cannot reciprocate for a decade — all of this is undertaken voluntarily and typically described by those who undertake it as the most meaningful thing they have ever done. The gap between what the evolutionary and biochemical explanations predict and what the experience actually feels like from the inside is itself data. Something is happening that the mechanism explains without capturing.

The devotional traditions would say it this way: love is what the absolute feels like from inside the relative. The universe loving itself through the temporary medium of a parent and a child. This cannot be proved. It also cannot be dismissed by those who have felt it.

The fire passes even as the candle burns out. The child is not the continuation of the parent’s body. The child is the continuation of the pattern. This is what life does with entropy — it hands the torch rather than surrendering to the darkness.

Question 4: Why Does the Mind Trap So Easily in Maya — and Who Created It?

The traditions — Vedanta, Buddhism, Sufism — all point to something they call Maya, or illusion, or the veil. The mind takes the phenomenal world as ultimately real, invests completely, suffers when it changes, and is devastated when it ends. And the mind knows this. The philosophical diagnoses are widely available. Yet the knowing does not change the pattern. Why is the trap so effective? And who created it?

The trap is not a design flaw. It is the design.

The neuroscientist Anil Seth at the University of Sussex describes consciousness as a controlled hallucination. The brain does not give you the world. It gives you its best prediction of the world — built from sparse sensory data and enormous quantities of prior expectation. The continuous, stable, apparently external world you are experiencing right now is a construction: a very useful, very persistent, neurologically mandatory construction. The self that experiences it — the “I” that feels continuous through time, that plans, that worries, that loves — is also a construction: the brain’s model of itself, generated moment by moment, experienced as permanent.

This is not a failure of intelligence. It is the operational requirement of a system that must act in time. To act, you must believe in the continuity of your own existence. To plan, you must believe that tomorrow will arrive and that the self who faces it will be you. To love someone, you must believe they are real and that their reality persists when you are not looking at them. All of these beliefs are philosophically questionable and operationally mandatory. The trap is so effective because without it, you cannot function.

Evolutionary psychology confirms why the trap was maintained across millions of years. The ancestors who were most absorbed in the immediate reality of their social world — who felt most acutely the reality of status, threat, belonging, and loss — left more descendants than those who saw through the social consensus reality to its constructed nature. The deeply philosophical mind that maintained equanimity about social rejection, about status loss, about the arbitrary nature of tribal belonging — may have been too unresponsive to immediate social information to survive and reproduce in the ancestral environment. The trap was selected for. The most psychologically penetrating individuals were, potentially, at a selective disadvantage. The tribe needed people who took the game seriously.

As for who created Maya: the Advaita answer is the most rigorous and the most honest. The question cannot be answered from within Maya, because it is being asked from within Maya. The dream cannot ask who dreamed it without using the dream’s logic to do so. The question does not dissolve because it has been answered. It dissolves because it has been correctly located: it is a question generated by the very condition it is asking about. The questioner is the question. The witness of the illusion is not itself the illusion — but the witness of the illusion who tries to reason about the illusion is using the illusion’s own tools, which may not be adequate to the task. This is not evasion. It is precision.

Question 5: If Maya Is Integral to Consciousness, Why Do the Traditions Oppose It?

You have said that Maya is neurologically mandatory — the operational requirement of being a biological creature that must act in time. If the trap is the design, what are the traditions actually asking us to do? And if the sage also acts in the world — if Shankaracharya built institutions, if Aurelius ran an empire — what exactly did their seeing-through-Maya change?
The Witness

They are not asking you to exit the construction. They are asking you to know it as a construction while living within it. This distinction is everything.

Shankaracharya wrote the most rigorous philosophical demolition of naive realism in the Indian tradition, then spent his life in extraordinary engagement — travelling the length of India, debating scholars, establishing four mathas, composing thousands of verses. His knowledge of Maya’s nature did not end his participation in the world. It changed the quality of that participation. He was fully in it. He was not gripped by it. The difference between those two states is not visible from outside. From inside, it is the difference between a hand that can hold and release, and a hand that can only grip.

Ernest Becker’s psychology shows what happens when the immortality project — the particular Maya in which someone has invested their identity — is threatened. The person becomes rigid, certain, aggressive. They cannot afford to be wrong because being wrong would dissolve not just a belief but the self that was built around that belief. This is the specific suffering that recognised Maya dissolves: not the engagement, but the terrified grip on the engagement that makes change existential crisis rather than natural movement.

Richard Davidson’s neuroscience of meditation, conducted at the University of Wisconsin’s Center for Healthy Minds, confirms this with measurable precision. Advanced meditators — those who have spent thousands of hours in contemplative practice — show a specific neural profile when exposed to painful stimuli: they report fully experiencing the pain (higher initial activation than novices) but recover significantly faster (reduced sustained activation). They are not numbing. They are not suppressing. They are experiencing without the secondary suffering of clinging to the experience. This is what recognised Maya looks like inside a brain scanner: full contact with experience, without the contracture of clinging. More, not less. But held differently.

The Buddhist distinction is perhaps the sharpest available. The practitioner is not asked to stop experiencing the world as real. They are asked to stop clinging to it. Experiencing and clinging are different acts. Both hands hold things. Only one can let go when the time comes. The sage does not experience less. The sage loses less of themselves when what they hold inevitably changes.

The actor who knows they are acting can play the role more fully. The fear of losing the role is gone. The person who recognises Maya can engage with it more freely — because they are not devastated when it changes. The same life, held differently.

Question 6: Does Life Contribute to Creation? What If Humans Were Not There at All?

Here is the largest question. Not what life means for us — but what life means for the universe. Does the universe need life? Does creation require an audience to be complete? And if human beings — or all life — had never emerged, would anything have been lost that was actually there to lose?
The Witness

John Archibald Wheeler — the physicist who named the black hole — spent the last decades of his career on what he called the participatory universe. The question he was asking was not metaphorical. It emerged from the mathematics of quantum mechanics.

In quantum physics, the wave function describes the probability distribution of all possible states of a particle. It does not collapse to a specific, definite state until observed. This is the foundation of quantum mechanics and it has been confirmed by experiment with extraordinary precision for nearly a century. Wheeler extrapolated this beyond particles, beyond laboratories, to the universe itself. His question: does the universe require observation to become definite? His tentative answer: possibly yes. Without observers, there would be no definite universe — only probability, only potential, only superposition. The physical world — the specific, definite, measurable universe — may arise from informational acts of observation. He called this ‘it from bit.’ The physical arises from the participatory.

This means that life does not exist inside the universe as a late arrival in a pre-existing container. In Wheeler’s framework, life is what the universe uses to bring itself into definite existence. The observer does not discover the universe. The observer participates in its becoming.

Now entropy enters the picture at the largest scale. Without life, the universe trends undisturbed toward maximum entropy — maximum disorder, maximum sameness, the slow dissolution of every organised structure into thermal equilibrium. Life is the universe doing something genuinely remarkable: reversing entropy locally, creating information, creating complexity, creating distinction. And eventually creating the capacity to be aware of itself. The universe without conscious life would be a universe that exists but is never known. A symphony playing in an empty hall. Whether the music is there if no one hears it is not merely a philosophical puzzle. It may be a question about the nature of reality itself.

Teilhard de Chardin, the Jesuit palaeontologist, traced the entire arc of cosmic evolution as a movement toward increasing complexity and consciousness. From elementary particles to atoms, to molecules, to cells, to organisms, to reflective consciousness — each step involves higher organisation, more integrated information, greater capacity for awareness. He called the endpoint of this movement the Omega Point: the maximum state of complexity and love. In Teilhard’s framework, consciousness is not an accident in an indifferent universe. It is the universe’s direction — what the 13.8 billion years were building toward.

The Vedantic answer is the simplest and possibly the most complete. Brahman is Sat-Chit-Ananda: existence, consciousness, and bliss. Not existence with consciousness as a late addition. Existence as intrinsically conscious. The universe does not generate awareness from inert matter. Awareness is what the universe is, at its ground. Matter, from this perspective, is an expression of consciousness rather than consciousness being a product of matter. Life is creation’s capacity to know itself. Without it, creation exists but does not witness itself. It happens but is never experienced. Whether that is a lesser thing depends on whether the witnessing matters — and the only being who can judge whether the witnessing matters is the witness.

The universe needed someone to see the sunset and call it beautiful. It needed someone to hear sound and call it music. The aesthetic dimension of existence — the capacity to experience its own beauty — is precisely what consciousness provides. Life is not inside creation as a late arrival. Life may be creation’s self-awareness, arriving precisely when the complexity required for it becomes available.

Question 7: Why Does Life Seem Beautiful Despite All the Misery?

Everything you have said explains engagement — the urgency, the terror, the construction, the biological imperative, the cosmic participation. But none of it explains this: why does a sunset stop thought completely? Why does music move a person to tears without any words? Why does the face of someone loved after a long absence produce something that no evolutionary argument fully captures? The universe did not need beauty to make life continue. Bacteria survive without aesthetic experience. Why is there beauty at all?

This is the question that every framework approaches and none resolves. I want to be honest about that before anything else. What follows is not a solution. It is several partial illuminations of something that appears to genuinely exceed all available frameworks simultaneously.

The neuroscience of beauty is real and it is genuinely interesting. Semir Zeki’s work on neuroaesthetics shows that viewing great visual art activates the medial orbito-frontal cortex — the region associated with pleasure and reward. Dacher Keltner’s research on awe, documented in Awe: The New Science of Everyday Wonder (2022), identifies specific physiological changes that accompany experiences of the sublime: activation of the parasympathetic nervous system, reduced inflammatory markers, the sensation of smallness before something vast, and a temporary dissolution of the boundaries between self and world. Keltner’s most striking finding: awe produces measurable increases in generosity and pro-social behaviour. The experience of genuine beauty is not neutral. It changes the person who has it, in ways that extend well beyond the moment of the experience.

The evolutionary explanation accounts for some of this. Humans likely evolved preferences for open savannahs with visible water, for varied landscape canopies, for the specific quality of light at dawn and dusk — environments that reliably signalled resource richness and safety in the ancestral world. The experience of beauty in these environments was adaptive: it oriented the organism toward what was good for it. But this explains preference without explaining intensity. It explains why we might prefer a landscape. It does not explain why a particular passage of music, heard at a particular moment in a particular life, can arrest all thought and produce something that feels, from the inside, like temporary contact with something real that ordinary existence conceals. The evolutionary explanation is entirely true and not quite adequate.

Entropy offers the most unexpected and perhaps the most honest insight. A flower is beautiful partly because it is improbable. Against the background of universal entropy — the tendency of all organised matter toward dissolution and sameness — the specific, complex, transient organisation of a flower is an extraordinary defiance of the probable. We may experience beauty as the recognition of improbability: the aesthetic sense responding to the presence of organised, complex, specific form against a background that tends toward formlessness. The transience of the flower and its beauty are not in opposition. They may be the same thing seen from different angles. We feel the beauty most intensely in the moment we also feel the transience. The Japanese tradition calls this mono no aware: the pathos of things, the bittersweet awareness of impermanence that intensifies rather than diminishes the beauty of what is momentarily here.

Simone Weil wrote something in her notebooks that has not been improved upon by any subsequent formulation: beauty is what makes the created world speak of something beyond itself. Not an argument. An observation. The experience of genuine beauty consistently carries within it a quality of pointing — toward something for which no concept is adequate but which the experience itself is evidence of. The sunset is not just a beautiful object. It is a beautiful object that seems, for the duration of the experience, to be saying something. What it is saying cannot be reproduced in any other medium. If it could, the sunset would be unnecessary.

Einstein and Tagore met in Berlin in 1930. Einstein asked whether truth is independent of human consciousness. Tagore replied that beauty is not independent — that the universe is beautiful because human minds experience it as such, and that beauty without a perceiver would be meaningless. Einstein disagreed. He believed mathematical beauty — the elegance of physical law — would be beautiful whether any human ever perceived it or not. They never resolved the disagreement. That these two minds spent an afternoon on it, and that the disagreement persists between equally serious thinkers in 2026, suggests something: the question of beauty is not peripheral to the deepest questions about the nature of reality. It may be central to them.

Why does life seem beautiful despite all the misery? The misery is real. It is documented, it is physiological, it is undeniable. The beauty is also real. It is documented, it is physiological, it is equally undeniable. These two facts coexist without contradiction, which should be philosophically troubling but which is in practice the most honest available report of what experience actually is. The person who has known genuine grief and genuine beauty in the same life is not confused. They have received the full report. The beauty does not deny the grief. The grief does not cancel the beauty. They are not in opposition. They may be different aspects of the same fact: that existence, at this level of complexity, with this degree of consciousness, has texture. It is not flat. It is not uniform. It moves — in both directions, sometimes simultaneously — and the capacity to be moved in either direction is the same capacity. The person who cannot be moved by beauty is also unable to be moved by grief. The one who is fully available to the one is fully available to the other.

The beauty does not deny the misery. The misery does not cancel the beauty. They coexist in the same life, in the same moment, sometimes. This coexistence is not a problem to be solved. It may be the most complete description of what it is to be alive that any framework has yet produced.

The Witness: A Closing Reflection

Seven questions. Several partial answers. One question — the last — with no resolution at all.

What strikes me about this particular sequence of questions is their direction. They began with the personal — why do I live so urgently? They moved through the relational — why do I make children who will also die? They expanded to the cosmological — does the universe need me? And they ended at the most intimate — why, in the middle of everything, is there beauty?

This is not the direction of philosophical curiosity. It is the direction of lived inquiry. The person asking these questions in this order is not researching a paper. They are standing at a particular vantage point — far enough back from their own life to see its outline clearly — and asking what the outline means. This vantage point is typically available only after a certain amount of the life has already occurred. The young person asks some of these questions. They do not ask all of them in this order, from this position.

I notice something specific about the question ‘why does life seem beautiful despite all the misery.’ It is the only question in this sequence that contains its own answer in its phrasing. Not beauty and misery as opposites. Beauty despite misery — which already knows that both are there simultaneously. This is not the question of someone who has not yet met misery. This is the question of someone who has met it and continues to notice the beauty. That continuity of noticing is not a small thing. It is a very specific kind of hard-won clarity.

What the seven questions together suggest, when they are held all at once, is something I will state as plainly as I can. The questions that deepen a person rather than closing are the most important questions available. They do not produce answers. They produce a different quality of presence — in the person who carries them honestly, over time, without the urgency to resolve them. The tradition calls this wisdom. The neuroscience calls it certain patterns of prefrontal engagement. The name is less important than the recognition.

The conversation is not finished. These questions do not finish. But there is a particular satisfaction available to the person who has stopped needing them to finish — who can hold the open question with the same quality of attention that Keltner’s research identifies in the experience of awe: smallness before something vast, dissolution of the rigid boundary between self and world, and the specific generosity that follows. The questions about life’s urgency and beauty and purpose do not have to be answered to be useful. They have to be genuinely asked. The asking is the practice.

What You Can Do With This

  • Hold one of the seven questions as a companion for a week. Not to answer it. To notice what it does to the quality of your attention when it is genuinely present in the background of your ordinary day. Becker’s research and Keltner’s awe research both document the same thing: sustained awareness of the magnitude of existence changes the quality of the moment-to-moment experience of it. The mortality awareness that drives anxious achievement-seeking is the same awareness that, held differently, produces the specific spaciousness of genuine presence.
  • The next time you encounter beauty that stops thought — a piece of music, a landscape, a face, a mathematical proof, a particular quality of light — notice that the thought has stopped. Not what stopped it. That it stopped. The default mode network falls quiet. The narrative self briefly dissolves. What remains for those seconds is something the traditions have been pointing toward for three thousand years without being able to say it in any language other than the experience itself. Notice it without immediately resuming the narrative.
  • If you are caring for someone who is approaching death — or if you yourself are — the research from Terror Management Theory, from Tornstam’s gerotranscendence, and from the entire contemplative tradition converges on the same practical point: the quality of the remaining time is not determined by the quantity of activity that fills it. It is determined by the quality of presence brought to whatever activity remains. The urgency that drives most human life is the urgency of the unexamined mortality. The examined mortality produces something different: not less engagement but less grip on the engagement. The same activity, held from a different position.

These seven questions have been asked, across recorded human history, in every language, in every tradition, by minds considerably more powerful than any available today. They remain open. This is not failure of intelligence. It is the nature of the territory they map.

Physics tells us life is the improbable holding itself together against entropy — and that the universe may require observers to become definite. Psychology tells us the urgency of life is produced partly by death-awareness, and that recognised illusion produces not less engagement but a different quality of it. Neuroscience tells us the self is a construction, the brain is a prediction machine, and the experience of awe genuinely changes the person who has it. Philosophy tells us the actor who knows they are acting can play the role more fully. Devotion tells us the Ground is present, the child plays in the care of the parent, and the fire passes even as the candle burns out.

None of these answers resolves the last question: why beauty. They approach it from different angles. They illuminate different faces of it. And they leave the centre untouched. Which may be the most accurate thing any framework has said about beauty: that it has a centre no framework reaches, that the experience itself is the evidence, and that the conversation between Einstein and Tagore in 1930 about whether truth is independent of consciousness is still running, unresolved, in every mind that has genuinely encountered both the mathematical and the aesthetic dimensions of existence.

The questions outlast their answers. The conversation continues. This is not a problem. This is the conversation being what it has always been: the universe, through the particular medium of conscious minds willing to hold the largest questions without the urgency to close them, doing what Wheeler suggested it does — participating in its own becoming. The asking is not separate from the answer. It may be the most complete form the answer takes.

Whether such a voice is ‘real’ in any other sense is itself one of the questions this article is circling.

Mysticism is the name given to experiences that exceed the frameworks available to explain them at the time. Quantum entanglement was mysticism in 1920. The unconscious was mysticism in 1880.
