💡 Quick Answer: Where Do Thoughts Come From?

Right now, before reading further, try this: stop your next thought from arising. Decide exactly what thought you will have in the next ten seconds. You cannot do either. And this failure — this absolute, non-negotiable inability to control your own thinking process — is the most philosophically significant fact about human consciousness that most people spend their entire lives not noticing. The ancient Indian sage who wrote the first verse of the Kena Upanishad approximately 3,000 years ago noticed it. The neuroscientist Benjamin Libet noticed it in a laboratory in 1983. Introduction: The Experiment You Cannot Pass

Try it now. Not metaphorically — actually try it. Stop your next thought from arising. Not calm it, not redirect it, not distract yourself from it. Stop it completely, before it arises. You have five seconds.

You could not do it. Nobody can. And this failure — this complete, total, non-negotiable inability to control the arising of your own thoughts — is the most philosophically consequential fact about human experience that most people notice for approximately three seconds and then forget about.

What makes this failure interesting is not the failure itself. It is what the failure implies. If you cannot stop your thoughts from arising, then thoughts arise — without your permission, without your direction, without your authorship. Thoughts happen to you. You observe them. You claim them afterward as ‘your’ thoughts. But you did not generate them. Something else did. And the question of what that something else is, and what it implies about who you are, is what this article investigates from two methodologically opposite starting points that have, over the last three decades, converged on the same answer.

If every thought is related to an I, then the I-sense is the first thought — the one thought from which all others depend. This I-sense is not a true self; it is the aham-vritti, the I-thought, the first modification of pure consciousness that claims ‘I am this body,’ ‘I am this mind,’ ‘I am this person.’ And because it is a thought, it has a source. The instruction: when any thought arises, rather than following the thought’s content, ask: ‘Who is having this thought?’ or simply ‘Who am I?’ The investigation is not intellectual. It is an attempt to find the referent of ‘I’ — to locate the separate entity that is claiming ownership of the thought. When the investigation is sustained, what is found, according to Ramana and the thousands of practitioners who have followed this path, is that no separate entity is located. The I-thought dissolves back into pure awareness. And in that dissolution, for the duration of the dissolution, there is no subsequent thought arising — because subsequent thoughts require the I-thought as their foundation.

This is the most specific and reproducible instruction available anywhere in the literature on thought origin: trace the thought to its source by asking who is thinking it, and the source reveals itself not as another thought but as the background awareness in which all thoughts arise. Neuroscience would describe this as the deactivation of the posterior cingulate cortex’s self-referential processing and the consequent suspension of DMN-generated thought. Part 3: The Deeper Investigation — Five Questions That Change Everything

1. If I Don’t Generate My Thoughts, Am I Responsible for Them?

This is the first anxiety that arises when people genuinely engage with the evidence that thoughts are not consciously generated. If the thought ‘I could hit that person’ arose without your permission, are you morally responsible for it? If the racist, violent, or sexually intrusive thought that appeared without invitation is not your deliberate creation, does it reveal something about you?

Antonio Damasio’s research has established that the traditional separation of thought and emotion is neurologically inaccurate. In Descartes’ Error (1994), Damasio documented the case of Phineas Gage and subsequent patients with damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex who retained intellectual function but lost emotional regulation — and consequently made catastrophically poor decisions. Emotion is not the enemy of rational thought; it is the substrate on which rational thought operates. Thoughts and feelings are not separate processes but aspects of a single integrated cognitive-emotional process.

The implication for the source-of-thought question: emotions arise from the same pre-conscious process as thoughts. The feeling of anxiety is not first felt and then thought about — the neural processes producing the feeling and those producing the associated anxious thought are simultaneous and co-generated. The Yoga Sutras’ Vritti classification includes both cognitive and affective modifications of the Chitta without distinguishing them — reflecting the same non-dual account of thought-feeling that neuroscience has now confirmed. Ashtavakra’s instruction is the same for both: you are not the thought, and you are not the feeling. You are the awareness in which both arise and dissolve.

4. Do We Think in Language, or Is Language Just How We Report Thoughts?

This question has occupied philosophy and cognitive science for a century. The Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, in its strong form, proposed that the language you speak determines the thoughts you can have. The weak form — now generally accepted — proposes that language influences the categories, distinctions, and habitual framings available to thought without determining its entire content. Research with congenitally deaf individuals, pre-linguistic infants, and aphasia patients confirms that non-linguistic thought exists and can be sophisticated.But most of what adults call ‘thinking’ is inner speech — the internal monologue conducted in the same neural substrates (Broca’s area, Wernicke’s area, the supplementary motor area) as external speech. The Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky proposed that inner speech is ‘condensed’ external speech — social language internalised and abbreviated into private thought. If Vygotsky is right, then much of our private thinking is structured by the language we learned socially, which means thoughts are shaped by culture, history, and the specific linguistic community that formed us. The source of thought is, in this account, partly social and trans-individual — similar to Jung’s collective unconscious operating through the medium of culturally-shared linguistic categories rather than through trans-personal archetypes.The ancient traditions were largely pre-occupied with the layer of thought that precedes language: the Vikalpa of Patanjali’s Vritti taxonomy is specifically the verbal-conceptual modification — thought as linguistic construction without real object. But the deeper Vrittis — Pramana, Viparyaya, Smriti — are not necessarily linguistic. And the state that the traditions prescribe as the goal — Turiya, the witness, pure awareness — is explicitly beyond language. The Mandukya Upanishad’s description of Turiya: ‘Not inward-turned, not outward-turned, not both, not a mass of cognition, not cognitive, not non-cognitive.’ Language fails at the boundary. Both neuroscience and ancient philosophy recognise that the deepest states of awareness precede and transcend linguistic categorisation.

5. What Happens to Thoughts in Deep Sleep?

Deep dreamless sleep is one of the most philosophically interesting states available to human experience. Thoughts cease — but consciousness does not. This is the Mandukya Upanishad’s observation about Sushupti (deep sleep): ‘the mind is not awake, nor is it dreaming, but it is not absent.’ The person who wakes from deep sleep reports ‘I slept well, I knew nothing’ — the ‘I’ that knows it knew nothing was present throughout the sleep, aware of the absence of thought without itself being a thought.

Neuroscience has now begun to investigate the strange phenomenology of deep sleep. During slow-wave sleep (the deepest stage), the cortex’s information integration is dramatically reduced — the specific measure that Giulio Tononi’s Integrated Information Theory (IIT) proposes as the correlate of consciousness. Yet the person can be gently awakened from slow-wave sleep and report a very specific kind of experience: not dreaming, not nothing, but a state of awareness without specific content. Tononi and colleagues (Science, 2013) have argued that this suggests consciousness persists during deep sleep at a lower level of integration.

The Mandukya Upanishad describes exactly this: Sushupti is not unconsciousness but ‘prajnana-ghana’ (a mass of undivided consciousness), a state in which thoughts are absent but awareness remains. What remains when all thoughts are absent is, in the Upanishadic account, the same awareness that is always present — the Turiya that is not a fourth state but the ground of all four states: waking, dreaming, sleep, and their witness. The absence of thoughts in deep sleep does not extinguish the awareness that would be available if thoughts arose. It reveals that awareness is prior to thoughts, does not require them, and continues in their absence. This is the most direct empirical evidence available, to anyone who investigates their own experience, that they are not their thoughts.

The Three Great Conversations: Ancient Wisdom Speaks Directly

Academic analysis can describe what a text says. But the ancient teachings on thought and consciousness were not designed to be described. They were designed to be heard, considered, and allowed to do something to the mind that reads them. What follows is each of the three great texts — the Kena Upanishad, the Bhagavad Gita, and the Ashtavakra Gita — presented in the form they were intended: as direct transmission, with the verse alive on the page, the analogy unfolded in full, and the implication drawn to its conclusion. Four additional texts follow, each bringing something the others do not.

Conversation 1: The Kena Upanishad — The Question Beneath Every Question

The sage begins not with a statement but with a question. And the question is not what you expect.

✧   ॐ   ✧ Keneṣitaṃ patati preṣitaṃ manaḥ — Keneṣitaṃ vācaṃ imaṃ vadanti ·
“ By whom impelled does the mind fall upon its objects? By whose command does the first breath go forth? By whom is this speech that we speak impelled? ” — Kena Upanishad, Verse 1 ·

Sit with this a moment. The sage is not asking what you are thinking. He is not asking how the mind works. He is asking who — or what — is doing the powering. The distinction is everything.

Think of a lamp in a dark room. The lamp illuminates everything in the room — the furniture, the walls, the faces of the people present, the shadows behind the objects. But look carefully: can the lamp illuminate its own flame? Can the source of the light be seen by the light it produces? No. The flame is what makes seeing possible; it cannot be seen in the same way that it enables seeing. The lamp can reveal everything except the very thing that enables it to reveal anything.

Your mind is that lamp. It illuminates experience. It processes perception, analyses situations, constructs narratives, generates plans, and produces what you call your thoughts. But what enables the mind to do any of this? The mind itself cannot answer this question — because answering it would require using the very instrument whose power source is in question. You cannot use the flashlight to see the hand that holds it.

The mind cannot know that which enables the mind to know. The eye sees everything in the room except itself. The sword cannot cut itself. Every instrument has one specific limitation: it cannot be its own object. The mind’s limitation is the most interesting one: it cannot perceive the Consciousness that makes its perceiving possible.

The Kena Upanishad continues with a statement that has been called the most profound sentence in any philosophical tradition:

“ That which the mind cannot think, but by which, they say, the mind is made to think — know That alone as Brahman, not this which people worship here. ” — Kena Upanishad, Verse 1.5 ·

A lightbulb emits light. But the lightbulb cannot ‘see’ the electricity flowing through it. The electricity is invisible to the bulb while being the source of everything the bulb does. In exactly this way: the mind can grasp thoughts, process memories, and construct arguments, but it can never make an object of the Consciousness that makes all this grasping, processing, and constructing possible. That Consciousness exists before the thought arises, persists while the thought is occurring, and remains when the thought dissolves. It is the unchanging background against which the entire thought-drama plays out.

This is why the sage asks ‘by whom is the mind impelled’ rather than ‘what does the mind do.’ The what is visible. The who is what the Upanishad is interested in. And the Upanishad’s answer — that the who cannot be known by the mind but is what enables the mind to know — is simultaneously the most philosophically radical and the most experientially available answer ever offered to this question. You cannot think your way to it. You can only stop taking yourself to be the thoughts, and notice what remains.

Conversation 2: The Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 6 — The Mind Is Both Liberator and Prison

Arjuna has just asked Krishna the most practical question in the dialogue: if the mind is so difficult to control, what hope does any ordinary person have? The question arises from experience that every human being recognises. You decide not to worry. You worry. You decide to be patient. You snap at someone. You decide to stop replaying an old argument. It replays itself, uninvited, three days later. Arjuna is articulating the universal human predicament: the gap between intention and the mind’s actual behaviour.

Krishna’s answer does not begin with a technique. It begins with a principle:

✧   ॐ   ✧ Uddhared ātmanātmānaṃ nātmānam avasādayet — Ātmaiva hy ātmano bandhuḥ ātmaiva ripur ātmanaḥ ·
“ Let a man lift himself by himself. Let him not degrade himself. For the self alone is the friend of the self, and the self alone is the enemy of the self. ” — Bhagavad Gita 6.5 ·

The verse sounds simple. Its implication is vast. The same mind that produces your suffering is the instrument of your liberation. The same capacity for thought that generates the anxious spiral, the self-criticism, the rumination — that same capacity, differently related to, differently understood, is what makes freedom possible. The mind is not the enemy. Ignorance of the mind’s nature is the enemy.

Krishna offers an analogy that every human being who has ever held a tool understands immediately. A sharp sword in the hands of a skilled warrior is protection. The same sword in untrained hands is a danger to the person holding it. The sword itself is completely neutral. Whether it protects or harms depends entirely on the relationship between the holder and the sword, the skill, the understanding, and the intention of the one wielding it. The mind functions identically.

When we become the slave of the mind rather than its master, suffering begins. A single thought can generate an entire fictional narrative — of what might happen, what others think of you, how things could go wrong — and the mind, left unguided, multiplies that thought into an entire library of suffering that none of it has actually occurred.

This is what Krishna means by the mind as enemy: not that the mind is inherently hostile but that an untrained, unexamined mind runs on automatic — generating thoughts from its Vasana-Samskara patterns, attaching to them, acting from them, and producing consequences that the person did not choose and often does not even understand. The mind that runs on automatic is what the Gita calls the enemy of the self. The mind that has been understood, examined, and related to consciously is what it calls the friend.

Then Krishna says something that separates his teaching from every suppression-based approach to mental discipline:

✧   ॐ   ✧ Yato yato niścarati manaś cañcalam asthiram — tatas tato niyamy aitād ātmany eva vaśaṃ nayet ·
“ Wherever the mind wanders — restless and unsteady — from there, withdrawing it, let the practitioner bring it back under the sway of the Self alone. ” — Bhagavad Gita 6.26 ·

The word is ‘nayet’ — let him lead it, bring it, guide it. Not force it, not crush it, not punish it for wandering. The mind will wander. This is its nature, in the same way that it is the nature of a river to flow toward lower ground. The practice is not to stop the river but to redirect it — gently, consistently, without drama. Each time the mind wanders into its habitual patterns, notice, and return. This is the entire practice, described in one compound word.

And for those who think meditation means achieving a completely blank mind, Krishna offers the most important correction in the Gita’s chapter on meditation:

✧   ॐ   ✧ Pravāntasya ātmanaḥ yogaṃ seviṣyatī ti yo bhavet — Sthirabuddhir asamūḍho brahma-nivīḥ pratīṣṭī ·
“ Just as a lamp in a windless place does not flicker — such is the simile used for a practitioner of yoga who has subdued the mind and practises the union of the self. ” — Bhagavad Gita 6.19 ·

Notice: the analogy is not a lamp whose flame has been extinguished. It is a lamp in a windless place — a lamp that continues to burn, fully and completely, but in an environment where external disturbances no longer cause it to flicker. The awakened mind is not a mindless mind. It is a mind that thinks clearly, perceives accurately, and responds appropriately, undisturbed by the random associations and emotional amplifications that characterise the untrained mind. The mountain analogy that closes this teaching says the same thing: the mountain stands completely firm while the storms rage around it. It does not resist the storm. It simply is not moved by it.

Conversation 3: The Ashtavakra Gita — The Mirror That Knows It Is Not the Reflections

Of all the texts in any tradition on consciousness and thought, the Ashtavakra Gita is the most startling. It does not build to its conclusion. It delivers it in the first paragraph, the first verse, the first breath of the first chapter. There is no gradual approach. There is no preliminary teaching. Ashtavakra walks into the room where King Janaka is sitting and says:

✧   ॐ   ✧ Muktábhimínī saṃsarē — nirvedaṃ tatraiva jāyate — tatrapi kṣīyān nāśaḥ — tasmād dehe na kurvīta ·
“ You are not the body, you are not the senses, you are not the mind, you are not even the intellect. You are the pure Witness-Consciousness, utterly free. This is your true nature. Know it now. ” — Ashtavakra Gita 1.3-1.4 ·

Janaka has come to Ashtavakra with philosophical questions. Ashtavakra does not answer the philosophical questions. He cuts through to the experiential fact that makes all philosophical questions secondary.

Consider a large, old mirror in a busy public place. Hundreds of people pass in front of it each day: people who are laughing, people who are weeping, people who are angry, people who are in love, people who are afraid. The mirror reflects every expression that comes before it, with perfect fidelity and perfect impartiality. But the mirror retains none of them. When the laughing person walks away, the mirror does not continue to show their laughter. When the grieving person has gone, the mirror does not hold on to their grief. The mirror is completely, utterly unaffected by what passes across its surface. It reflects everything. It keeps nothing. It identifies with none of it.

You are that mirror, says Ashtavakra. Thoughts come. Emotions come. Memories come. Fears come. Desires come. They all appear in the mirror of your awareness, with perfect clarity. But you are not those appearances. You are the mirror itself: the pure, unblemished, utterly unaffected awareness in which all of these appearances arise, exist briefly, and dissolve.

Suffering begins not when thoughts arise but when the mirror mistakes itself for the reflections. When you say ‘I am angry’ you have performed the fundamental act of misidentification: you have confused the mirror with what is appearing in it. Anger is appearing. You are the awareness in which it appears.

Ashtavakra presses the point with a precision that no other text matches:

✧   ॐ   ✧ Aham cintā mahavyadhih — tasyā násti pratīkāraḥ — idānīm eva sāhaiva — kim iti na svabhāvaḥ ·
“ The thought ‘I am bound’ is itself the bondage. And the thought ‘I am free’ is itself the liberation. But you who are neither bound nor free — what do you gain by thinking either? ” — Ashtavakra Gita 1.14 ·

This is where Ashtavakra goes further than any other text. Even the thought ‘I am free’ is still a thought — still appearing in the mirror, still not the mirror itself. The mirror has no opinion about what appears in it. It does not think ‘this is a good reflection’ or ‘this is a bad reflection.’ It simply reflects, impartially. Your true nature, Ashtavakra is saying, is like this: not free from thoughts (that would be an impossible condition), but free in the midst of thoughts, because identified as the awareness that observes thoughts rather than as the thoughts themselves.

And then he points to the most available confirmation of this: the space between thoughts.

✧   ॐ   ✧ Dvayor madhye sphuraty ātmā — nityam chánanda-vigāhinah — tattvajnāṃ tu vijānītām — jīvanmuktasya lakṣaṇam ·
“ Between two thoughts, in the interval of extraordinary subtlety, there shines the Self. The one who has come to know this is known as the liberated one, even while living. ” — Ashtavakra Gita 18.66 ·

You do not need a tradition, a teacher, a practice, or a technique to verify this. Right now, notice the thought you have just completed reading this sentence. Now wait for the next thought. In the interval — however brief, however subtle — there is something. Not nothing. Not darkness. A quiet, present, clear awareness that is not itself a thought. This is what Ashtavakra is pointing at. This is what the Mandukya Upanishad calls Turiya. This is what Ramana Maharshi calls the Self. This is what neuroscience has not yet measured — not because it is not there, but because it is the measurement instrument, and the instrument cannot measure itself.

Four Additional Credible Texts on the Source of Thought

The three great conversations above present the primary teaching. Four additional texts, each bringing something the others do not, complete the picture available from the ancient traditions. Each is academically rigorous, widely cited in consciousness research, and practically significant.

Text 4: The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad — ‘You Cannot Think the Thinker of Thinking’

The Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (c.700 BCE) is the oldest and largest of the Upanishads, and it contains what may be the most precise single statement about the relationship between consciousness and thought ever articulated. It comes from the dialogue between the sage Yajnavalkya and his wife Maitreyi, on the eve of his departure into forest renunciation.

✧   ॐ   ✧ Vijnatāram are kena vijānīyāt? — Drashṭāram are kena paśyet? ·
“ By what should one know the Knower? By what should one see the Seer? By what should one hear the Hearer? By what should one think the Thinker? By what should one understand the Understander? ” — Brihadaranyaka Upanishad 3.4.2 ·

This is the same logical structure as the Kena Upanishad’s argument but stated with even greater specificity. The thinker cannot think the thinker. The seer cannot see the seer. Every act of cognition requires a cogniser that is not itself cognised. You can think about anything in the universe. You cannot think about what is doing the thinking, because the thinking-instrument itself is what you are using. The moment you try to objectify the thinker, the thinker has stepped back one level to observe the objectification. There is always one more step back. What Yajnavalkya is pointing at is the logical and experiential terminus of this infinite regress: the awareness that cannot be made into an object because it is always already the subject. This awareness is what thinks through the mind, not what the mind produces.

Yajnavalkya’s teaching anticipates David Chalmers’ hard problem of consciousness by approximately 2,700 years: the subjective knower can never be fully accounted for by an objective description of the neural processes it is engaged in, because the description itself requires the knower to understand it. The hard problem is not a problem to be solved. It is a pointer toward the nature of the knower.

Text 5: The Dhammapada — Mind as the Forerunner of All Actions

“ Mind is the forerunner of all actions. All deeds are led by mind, created by mind. If one speaks or acts with a corrupted mind, then suffering follows, as the wheel follows the hoof of an ox. ” — Dhammapada, Verse 1 ·

The Dhammapada opens not with a story, not with a cosmological account, not with a teacher’s biography. It opens with the mind. ‘Manopubbangama dhamma’ — mind is the forerunner. Not the body, not speech, not social circumstances. Mind. And verse 2 provides the corresponding positive case: if one speaks or acts with a clear, settled mind, then ease follows, as a shadow that never departs.

The Buddhist understanding of thought’s origin is embedded in the doctrine of pratityasamutpada (dependent origination): thoughts do not arise from a permanent, independent self but from a chain of conditions — contact, sensation, perception, mental formations, consciousness — in which each element arises dependent on the others, with no first cause and no independent self behind the process. The thought of anger arises because contact with a certain experience produced a sensation, the sensation was perceived in a certain way, the perception activated mental formations (conditioning, memory, Samskara) conditioned by prior experience, and these mental formations produced the thought. There is no ‘you’ who decided to be angry. There is a chain of conditions that produced the anger-thought, and the ‘I who is angry’ is itself one more mental formation arising in the same chain.

This is the Buddhist version of Libet’s finding: the conscious ‘I’ is not the initiator of the thought but one more element in the chain that produces it. The practice the Dhammapada prescribes — sati, mindfulness, moment-to-moment awareness of the mental formations as they arise — is the specific method for observing this chain in real time, without identifying with any of its elements. When you can observe the chain, you are not the chain. The observer is not a link in what it observes.

Text 6: The Vivekachudamani by Shankaracharya — The Most Systematic Account of the Witness

The Vivekachudamani (Crest Jewel of Discrimination), Shankaracharya’s 8th-century CE masterwork of Advaita Vedanta, provides the most systematic philosophical account of the relationship between the witness and thought available in any tradition. Its relevance to the question of thought’s source is specific and important: it distinguishes carefully between the five sheaths (Panchakosha) that appear to constitute the self and the pure Awareness (Sakshi) that underlies them all.

The five sheaths: Annamaya kosha (the physical body, sustained by food); Pranamaya kosha (the vital energy body, the breath-life); Manomaya kosha (the mind-body, the layer of thought and emotion); Vijnanamaya kosha (the intellect-body, the discriminating layer of cognition); Anandamaya kosha (the bliss-body, the deep satisfaction of dreamless sleep). Thoughts arise in the Manomaya kosha. But the awareness that observes these thoughts, the awareness that knows whether thoughts are present or absent, the awareness that persists unchanged through all five sheaths including deep sleep — this is the Sakshi, the witness, which Shankaracharya identifies as the only non-composite, non-dependent element of human experience.

The Vivekachudamani’s specific contribution to the question of thought’s origin: it establishes through systematic philosophical reasoning that the Manomaya kosha (the thought-body) is an object of the Sakshi’s observation, not the Sakshi itself. Thoughts are phenomena in awareness, not awareness itself. The one who is aware of thoughts is not the thoughts’ author in any fundamental sense — it is the unchanging awareness that witnesses the thought-stream arising from the subtler aspects of Prakriti (nature). This is Advaita Vedanta’s most rigorous argument for the position that all three great texts above present in different forms.

Text 7: The Tripura Rahasya — The Most Narrative Treatment of Witness-Consciousness in Sanskrit

The Tripura Rahasya is the least well-known of the texts gathered here and arguably the most immediately accessible to the modern reader. It is a narrative text — a story about a king and a princess, wrapped around one of the most precise philosophical investigations of the witness position available in Sanskrit literature. Ramana Maharshi specifically recommended it, calling it one of the greatest works on Advaita Vedanta available outside the direct Upanishadic tradition.

The text’s central philosophical moment involves the princess Hemalekha explaining to her husband, the king Hemachuda, why the happiness he seeks in external objects cannot be found there. She does this not through abstract argument but through a specific investigation of what happens in the mind during moments of genuine satisfaction:

Hemalekha’s specific argument about thought: when a desired object is attained, the mind briefly rests from its seeking activity. In that brief rest, in the gap between one desire’s fulfillment and the next desire’s arising, the mind is momentarily quiet. And in that quiet, happiness is experienced. People attribute this happiness to the object they obtained. But the object only produced the moment of mental rest; the happiness is the mind’s own ground — the awareness beneath the thought-stream — briefly uncovered.

This argument applies directly to thoughts: thoughts are not where your life is. Your life is in the awareness that underlies the thoughts — the ground that is briefly revealed in the space between thoughts, in deep absorption in any activity, in moments of genuine presence. Thought is the movement on the surface of something much more fundamental. The Tripura Rahasya’s specific contribution is to make this argument narratively and emotionally compelling rather than abstractly philosophical: it shows, through Hemachuda’s personal investigation, what it actually feels like to turn toward the witness rather than toward the thought-stream.

The Convergence: What All Seven Texts Agree On

Seven texts. Seven traditions. Separated by centuries, by geography, by theological context, and by methodology. What they agree on is not incidental.

Every one of them makes the same three claims. First: thought does not originate from the conscious I. The Kena Upanishad says the mind is powered by a prior Consciousness. The Brihadaranyaka says the thinker cannot think the thinker. The Dhammapada says thoughts arise from conditions, not from a self. The Bhagavad Gita says the mind is an instrument whose misuse — mistaking it for the self — is the root of suffering. The Ashtavakra Gita says identification with thoughts is the only bondage. The Vivekachudamani says thoughts arise in a sheath that the Sakshi observes but is not. The Tripura Rahasya says the ground beneath thoughts is the source of all genuine experience.

Second: something is present that is not a thought. The Kena Upanishad calls it Brahman. The Brihadaranyaka calls it the Knower. The Dhammapada points toward it in the practice of sati. The Bhagavad Gita calls it the mountain-stillness of the awakened practitioner. The Ashtavakra Gita calls it the mirror. The Vivekachudamani calls it the Sakshi. The Tripura Rahasya calls it the ground of happiness. These are not different things described in different words. They are the same pointing made from different angles.

Third: the recognition of this non-thought awareness is both the highest truth and the most practical action available. None of these texts is satisfied with theoretical agreement. Part 4: The Practical Convergence — What to Do With This

The question of where thoughts come from is not merely philosophical. Its most important content is practical: if you are not generating your thoughts, then you cannot control them by suppression, redirection, or positive thinking. But you can change your relationship to them. And changing your relationship to them changes everything.

Three practices are supported by both the neuroscience and the ancient traditions as effective shifts in the human relationship to spontaneous thought.

The practice of witnessing (Sakshi Bhava)

The most fundamental shift available: stop trying to control the content of your thoughts and shift your identification to the awareness that is watching the thoughts. The Ashtavakra Gita’s instruction is absolute in its simplicity: ‘You are not the mind, not the body, not the thoughts — you are pure Witness Consciousness.’ The practice is not the achievement of a state but the recognition of what is always already present: the awareness in which this sentence is being read, the awareness in which every thought arises, which itself is not a thought and cannot be a thought, because it is what observes them all.

Mindfulness-based interventions (MBSR, MBCT) operationalise this practice in clinical language: observe thoughts without judgment, without following their content, without identifying with them. The clinical evidence for MBCT (Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy) specifically demonstrates that this practice of de-centring from thought — learning to see thoughts as mental events rather than facts — reduces depression relapse rates by approximately 44% in three or more prior episode patients (Teasdale et al., 2000, JCCP; Segal et al., 2002). Self-inquiry (Atma Vichara)

Ramana Maharshi’s practice: the next time a thought produces a strong emotional response — fear, anger, craving, self-criticism — instead of following the thought’s content, ask: ‘Who is having this thought?’ Not rhetorically. Actually look for the referent of ‘I’ in that moment. The investigation is not intellectual. It is an attempt to directly locate the entity that is claiming ownership of the thought. Sustained investigation reveals that no such separate entity is located — what is found is the background awareness in which the thought and the question about it are both appearing. This experience, even momentarily, breaks the automatic identification with the thought’s content and produces what mindfulness researchers call ‘cognitive defusion’ — the loosening of the thought’s grip on experience.

Allowing thoughts without acting on them

The Yoga Sutras’ prescription for thought management is not suppression. Patanjali proposes ‘nirodha’ — translated as cessation but more precisely meaning the ending of identification with Vrittis, not the elimination of Vrittis themselves. Thoughts will arise. The Vasana-Samskara cascade will continue running. The practice is to not board the train — to allow the thought to arise, remain in awareness without being followed, and dissolve without having been acted upon or identified with. This is Patanjali’s train station analogy made concrete: many trains pass, you board only those going where you choose to go.

The neuroscience of this practice: ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy), which operationalises exactly this stance toward spontaneous thought, has substantial clinical evidence for anxiety, depression, chronic pain, and OCD. Its theoretical basis (cognitive defusion, psychological flexibility, values-based action) corresponds point-for-point with the Yoga Sutras’ prescription: don’t struggle with the thought, don’t identify with it, remain as the observer, act from your values rather than from the thought’s urgency.

The Quest Sage Insight

This article began with an experiment you cannot pass, and it ends with a recognition that matters more than any of the evidence it has documented.

The Kena Upanishad does not ask ‘what is a thought?’ It asks ‘by whom is the mind impelled?’ This is the more important question, because the answer to the second question tells you something about what you are, while the answer to the first question tells you only about what a thought is. Neuroscience has been answering the second question — from Libet’s readiness potential to the Default Mode Network to Friston’s predictive brain — for forty years without quite realising that this was what it was answering. The answer it has reached is: thoughts are not initiated by the conscious self. They arise from processes that are prior to, broader than, and largely inaccessible to the person who subsequently claims them as ‘my thoughts.’

The Indian philosophical traditions reached this same answer 3,000 years earlier, through a completely different method: the sustained first-person investigation of the nature of experience, conducted with the rigour that first-person methodology permits. And then they went one step further, which is where the ancient traditions have a genuine contribution to make that neuroscience has not yet caught up to: they identified not just the non-authorship of thought but the nature of what remains when you stop identifying as the thought-stream. The awareness that observes the DMN’s output. The Sakshi that watches the Vritti-cascade. The Turiya that underlies waking, dreaming, and sleep. The Hridayam from which the I-thought arises and to which it returns.

The question ‘Where do thoughts come from?’ has two answers. The first is scientific and mechanistic: from the Default Mode Network, from predictive models built by prior experience, from Vasana-Samskara cascades in the Chitta, from the pre-conscious neural preparation that Libet measured as 500 milliseconds of readiness potential before consciousness catches up. The second is philosophical and transformative: from Consciousness, which is what you actually are — not the thought stream, but the awareness that the thought stream arises within. The first answer tells you the mechanism. The second answer tells you what to do about it. The practice is the same: step back, observe, recognise yourself as the witness rather than the witnessed. And in that recognition lies the specific freedom that no suppression, no positive thinking, and no medication can provide: the freedom of the one who watches, rather than the one who is swept away.

What You Can Do With This

  • Try the witnessing experiment daily. For five minutes each morning, sit quietly and observe your thoughts without following their content. Don’t suppress them, don’t redirect them, don’t evaluate them. Simply notice each thought as it arises, name it silently (‘planning,’ ‘worrying,’ ‘remembering’), and let it pass without boarding it. You are not trying to stop thoughts. You are practising not identifying with them. This is Sakshi-bhava. It is also the evidence-based practice called mindfulness, and it has 30+ years of clinical research supporting its effectiveness for anxiety, depression, and cognitive flexibility.
  • Try Ramana Maharshi’s self-inquiry when a thought produces strong emotion. The next time anger, fear, or self-criticism arises as a thought, don’t follow the thought’s content. Instead, ask: ‘Who is having this thought?’ Turn your attention toward the referent of ‘I’ rather than toward the thought’s object. Notice what happens when you look directly for the ‘I’ that claims the thought. This is not a thinking exercise. It is a direct looking. Sustained for even 30 seconds, it tends to dissolve the emotional charge of the thought, not by suppressing it but by removing the identification that gave it its charge. This is cognitive defusion, practised as direct investigation.
  • Notice your Default Mode Network’s content patterns without judging them. If you pay attention to the spontaneous thoughts that arise when your mind is unoccupied, you will quickly notice that they fall into specific categories: social replays, future worries, self-assessments, autobiographical memories. These are your Vasana-Samskara patterns — the specific grooves that your history of experience has cut in your Chitta. You cannot eliminate them by will. You can, over time, change them by creating new experience patterns (new Samskaras) that gradually weaken the old ones. This is why meditation changes the brain structurally over time, as Sara Lazar’s research showed: the practice creates new neural patterns that gradually replace the default ones.
  • Read at least one primary text on this question. The Ashtavakra Gita (Swami Nityaswarupananda translation, Advaita Ashrama; or the John Richards online translation) is 20 chapters and can be read in an afternoon. It is the most direct, least equivocal statement of the witness-consciousness position available in any tradition. Three thousand years ago, an unnamed sage sat down and wrote: ‘By whom impelled does the mind fall upon its objects?’ The question was not answered by the tradition that produced it in a way that would satisfy a modern neuroscientist. But it was answered in a way that is consistent with what modern neuroscience has now found: the mind’s activity is not initiated by the conscious self. Something prior to and broader than the conscious I is running the thought-generation process. The Upanishad called it Brahman. Neuroscience calls it the Default Mode Network, the predictive generative model, the pre-conscious neural preparation. The names are wildly different. The pointing is the same.

The convergence matters not as a validation game — ancient wisdom does not need neuroscience’s approval, and neuroscience does not need the Upanishads’ blessing. It matters because the convergence suggests that both methodologies — the rigorous first-person investigation of the ancient traditions and the rigorous third-person investigation of modern neuroscience — are mapping the same territory. Where their maps overlap is where we can be most confident we are reading the territory accurately.

What both maps agree on is this: you are not your thoughts. Thoughts arise within you, not from you. You are the awareness in which they arise. And the recognition of this — even for a single moment, in the space between one thought and the next — is the most significant shift in human experience available, because it changes not what you think but who you take yourself to be in relation to thinking. That is what Ashtavakra called liberation, what Patanjali called Kaivalya, what Ramana called Self-Realisation, and what Killingsworth and Gilbert’s data would call the difference between being caught in mind-wandering and being present with your own experience. The path to the second condition runs through the same question the Kena Upanishad asked first: not ‘what are you thinking?’ but ‘who is doing the thinking?’

Q1. Does modern neuroscience prove that free will doesn’t exist?

Not definitively. Libet’s experiments show that the conscious intention to act arrives after the brain has begun preparing the action, which challenges the specific model of free will in which a conscious self initiates actions through deliberate choice. However, Libet himself noted the possibility of conscious veto power — the ability to abort an action the brain has prepared.
