The system is efficient, it carries genuine predictive validity (thin slicing works for a reason), and it is also profoundly incomplete. A first impression is not wrong. It is just a very small sample of a very large reality.

The Indian tradition says the same thing through different lenses. The Panchatantra’s warning against surface-reading. The Viveka of Yoga and Vedanta — the discriminating wisdom that distinguishes the surface from the depth. The Pratham Darshan as a moment of power and potency that must be honoured. The Namaskar as a deliberate act of reverence that creates a pause between the automatic amygdala response and the deeper encounter that might follow.

What I find most profound about Namaskar, in this context, is what it does to time. The 100-millisecond amygdala verdict is involuntary. The deliberate bow, the pressed palms, the acknowledgment of what is sacred in the person across from you — these create a second moment, a fraction of a second longer but qualitatively different from the first. In that second moment, the mind is reminded of something the amygdala does not know: that the person in front of you is more than what the first 100 milliseconds captured. Not because the first impression is wrong. But because no impression, however accurate, is ever complete.

The neuroscience gives us the mechanism. The tradition gives us the response. First impressions matter. And so does what comes after them.

  • Invest disproportionately in first 90 seconds. In any high-stakes first encounter — interview, important meeting, romantic interest, professional networking — the first 90 seconds matter more than everything else combined. The same biases that make your first impressions of others efficient but incomplete are operating in other people’s impressions of you. You are being evaluated at 100 milliseconds, and the evaluator’s amygdala is applying the same shortcuts and biases that yours does. Hold first impressions of others provisionally, recognising that they are a tenth-of-a-second sample of a much larger reality.

First impressions matter because the brain doesn’t offer the option of not forming them. They are not optional assessments you can choose to withhold. They are automatic, sub-second, emotionally-mediated evaluations that then shape every subsequent interaction with the person who generated them. Understanding this mechanism, in the detail that both neuroscience and the Indian tradition provide, is the first step toward using it wisely: investing in the first encounter, holding its conclusions provisionally, and maintaining the Viveka — the discriminating wisdom — to recognise that a tenth of a second is a very brief window in which to capture the full depth of any human being.
